Paul - Legal

I joined Racal in 1981 as an expert in business law - managing contracts, acquisitions, labour law, disputes - my activities were really varied.

When Thales bought Racal, I took on wider responsibilities within the Group's legal department in Great Britain. My experience with mergers and acquisitions, shareholdings and divestment was the reason Management offered me the job of steering the team in charge of that activity at head office. Until then I'd never thought of international mobility: my wife had her own career. Unexpectedly, it was my wife who was very interested by the idea of living in France and persuaded me to seize the opportunity for an international career and provide the children with a culture change while attending a British school in the Paris area. Looking back, I think that my decision has been highly advantageous.

From the outset, and this was crucial, everyone really wanted it to "work". I have been helped and supported in solving the practical problems. My knowledge of French certainly helped, although I still find disconcerting the habit people have here of all talking at the same time! I also appreciate having an overall vision of Thales's business. Being able to take risks to succeed, sharing knowledge, and working in a team: my experience is a good illustration of the Group's values.
