The ceremony brought together around 600 people (Airbus and Singapore Airlines employees, and journalists) and was also a chance for Singapore Airlines to reveal their new, spacious and luxurious A380 cabin interior. The aircraft will set off for Singapore on Tuesday 16th October prior to its first commercial flight to Sydney. Tickets for the flight were auctioned on eBay, raising some $1.3million (more than EUR900,000) for various charities.
"This is a major milestone for the A380 programme, and I would like to express my deepest appreciation to all parties concerned," stated Tom Enders, Airbus President and Chief Executive Officer.
Thales and joint venture Diehl Aerospace are key partners on the A380 programme, providing technology including avionics, navigation, cockpit, electrical, cabin systems and the Full Flight Simulator. To date, total orders and commitments for the A380 are 189 from 16 customers.
