Neil - Human Resources

I joined Racal Electronics in 1989 and spent the next twelve years working as a Human Resources Generalist at various operational entities. When Thales bought Racal, I had the chance to move to France, specialising initially in professional development, then in international mobility, and more recently in compensation. Geographic mobility and expatriation mean radically changing your way of thinking and working - and that's not always easy. Naturally, living in France, and wanting to understand the country and be effective in my working relations, I had to learn the language, and how to drive on the right! But the hardest part is the necessary adaptation to cultural differences, such as the importance here of hierarchy, collective status and trade union work. To cope, you have to be able to give up your old system of references, open up to other people, and persevere. My next job? Either in France or another country.
