I recently managed to achieve an important career goal and move from an administrative role to a technical one. I went from being a Project Planning & Control Administrator to a Production Planner. In the Administration field I felt that my career path was very limited, so when the opportunity presented itself to move into a Technical position, I took it, knowing that I would be provided with both on the job and off the job training to enhance my technical skills. I thought that it would be very hard "breaking into" a male dominated environment without a technical background, but just about everybody I have come across has been more than interested in sharing their knowledge. I like working on this major naval programme on the ground, liaising with development engineers upstream and production teams downstream, to see that work packages keep to schedule.
Expectations? I always make an effort to learn as much as I can, and from here I have so many opportunities, it just depends on the path I want to take. As I keep telling the guys in my office, "I'll be your boss one day".
